Summary
Under the direction of the Superintendent or General Foreman, the Mechanic A is responsible for repairing NJ TRANSIT equipment (buses or non-revenue vehicles) and performing maintenance work.
Roles and Responsibilities
Conduct testing, repair, installation, and maintenance of:
- Engines
- Transmissions
- HVAC systems
- Electrical systems
- Brake systems
- Suspension and steering systems
- Electronic components
- Painting equipment
Additional responsibilities include:
- Remove, inspect, repair, and replace components as needed.
- Remove and replace defective diesel engine components.
- Remove and replace engines and transmissions.
- Rebuild diesel engines.
- Diagnose vehicle mechanical and electrical issues.
- Repair equipment using hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and measuring instruments.
- Perform diesel engine adjustments including valves, timing, and injector heights.
- Determine equipment serviceability.
- Inspect bearings, axles, and brake system components.
- Replace, repack, and adjust wheel bearings.
- Repair and maintain all brake systems, including air brakes.
- Replace filters, oil, tires, worn parts, and light bulbs during inspections.
Education, Experience & Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- ASE Certification is a plus.
- Minimum three (3) years of mechanical experience, preferably diesel.
- Valid NJ Driver's License with the ability to obtain a CDL with Passenger Endorsement, or a valid NY/PA CDL with Passenger Endorsement.
- Must pass pre-employment physical and background checks.
- Good driving record with fewer than five (5) points.
- Monday–Friday schedule on 1st or 2nd shift, with overtime as needed.
