Summary

Under the direction of the Superintendent or General Foreman, the Mechanic A is responsible for repairing NJ TRANSIT equipment (buses or non-revenue vehicles) and performing maintenance work.

Roles and Responsibilities

Conduct testing, repair, installation, and maintenance of:

• Engines
• Transmissions
• HVAC systems
• Electrical systems
• Brake systems
• Suspension and steering systems
• Electronic components
• Painting equipment

Additional responsibilities include:

• Remove, inspect, repair, and replace components as needed.
• Remove and replace defective diesel engine components.
• Remove and replace engines and transmissions.
• Rebuild diesel engines.
• Diagnose vehicle mechanical and electrical issues.
• Repair equipment using hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and measuring instruments.
• Perform diesel engine adjustments including valves, timing, and injector heights.
• Determine equipment serviceability.
• Inspect bearings, axles, and brake system components.
• Replace, repack, and adjust wheel bearings.
• Repair and maintain all brake systems, including air brakes.
• Replace filters, oil, tires, worn parts, and light bulbs during inspections.

Education, Experience & Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• ASE Certification is a plus.
• Minimum three (3) years of mechanical experience, preferably diesel.
• Valid NJ Driver's License with the ability to obtain a CDL with Passenger Endorsement, or a valid NY/PA CDL with Passenger Endorsement.
• Must pass pre-employment physical and background checks.
• Good driving record with fewer than five (5) points.
• Monday–Friday schedule on 1st or 2nd shift, with overtime as needed.
