Summary

Under the direction of the Superintendent or Foreman, the Special Mechanic – Welder is responsible for repairing NJ TRANSIT buses, performing maintenance work, and completing a wide variety of welding and fabrication tasks.

Roles & Responsibilities

Conducts testing, repairs, installations, and maintenance on equipment including engines, brake systems, suspension, steering, electronics, electrical systems, HVAC, transmissions, painting equipment, and more.

  • Solder, braze, and gas weld steel, aluminum, and cast iron.
  • Perform DC, AC, MIG, and TIG welding on all metals.
  • Operate plasma cutting equipment.
  • Lay out, fabricate, and assemble components as needed.
  • Weld in all positions and work with sheet metal.
  • Follow all welding safety rules and shop safety procedures.
  • Operate hydraulic pistons, porta-powers, frame straightening devices, and other specialty tools.
  • Remove, replace, and align body parts and components on NJ TRANSIT buses, including MCI, NABI, New Flyer, and coach vehicles.
  • Fill and sand body panels and fiberglass components.
  • Read and use parts manuals, blueprints, sketches, and drawings.
  • Accurately complete required forms and daily time tickets.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.

Education, Experience & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • ASE Certification is a plus.
  • Commercial Driver License (CDL) or Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) required at the time of hire.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of welding experience.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical and background check.
  • Must be certified in welding and able to provide copies of prior certifications.
  • Ability to read blueprints, sketches, and technical drawings.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.
