Summary

The Bus Mechanic is responsible for repairing and maintaining NJ TRANSIT buses. This position performs inspections, testing, repairs, installation, and maintenance on automotive and mechanical equipment while diagnosing equipment malfunctions using specialized tools and testing equipment.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Adjust and reline air and hydraulic brakes.
  • Align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.
  • Use diagnostic equipment and test instruments to identify malfunctions.
  • Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and differential units.
  • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other critical components.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment including pumps and compressors.
  • Perform diagnostic testing using handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.
  • Perform preventive maintenance including oil changes, battery checks, and lubrication.
  • Install or rebuild diesel engines.
  • Recondition and replace pistons, bearings, gears, valves, and other components.
  • Repair and adjust seats, doors, windows, and vehicle accessories.
  • Repair and maintain fuel injection systems and other engine components.
  • Safely use hand tools and power tools in daily work.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support safe and efficient operations.

Education, Experience & Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical and background checks.
  • 2–15 years of automotive or diesel mechanical experience, depending on position.
  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair vehicles and equipment with minimal supervision.
  • 609 Air Conditioning Certification and at least three (3) H or T Series ASE Certifications preferred.
  • Valid NJ Driver's License with the ability to obtain a CDL with Passenger Endorsement, or a valid NY/PA CDL with Passenger Endorsement.
  • Good driving record with fewer than five (5) points.
