FAIRVIEW, N.J. — A Bergen County man who police confronted after NJ Transit employees found him in a bus garage in Fairview almost had an appearance of legitimacy — authorities said he was wearing an NJ Transit coat and uniform shirt.

And he almost had the right name, identifying himself as Kevin Corbett, NJ Transit CEO.

But the man later charged breaking and entering, theft and starting a small fire in a bus early Saturday morning was not the right man, Kevin S. Corbett, NJ Transit boss.

Kevin J. Corbett, 42, of Hillsdale also was charged with impersonating a public employee, according to a Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office complaint.

Police were called to NJ Transit’s Fairview bus garage at 5:27 a.m. to investigate a report of a man employees found trespassing, who was dressed in NJ Transit clothing and claimed to be CEO Kevin Corbett.

The man also identified himself to Fairview police as CEO Kevin Corbett, however, a review of surveillance camera footage showed that this Kevin Corbett got off a bus at 3:09 a.m. and walked into the bus garage wearing street clothes, police reports said.

Police found Corbett in a wash rack in the bus garage, which is closed to the public, wearing a yellow NJ Transit raincoat and an NJ Transit uniform shirt with an employee’s name on it.

Corbett also had NJ Transit receipt paper stick in a bag in his possession, authorities said. An NJ Transit employee told police that a fire had been started in a bus, damaging the floor. Police found a burned hand sanitizer wrapper in the ash on the bus floor, which matched a packet of wipes they found on Corbett, police said.

Corbett was lodged in the Bergen County jail as of Tuesday.
