The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is the third largest heavy rail transit system and sixth largest bus network in the U.S. WMATA’s Mechanical engineering group (ENGA-Mech) is seeking to fill the position of a Fire Protection Engineer. This engineer will work to support the fire protection with inhouse designs, review of designs and construction projects for Metrorail, Bus, and Ancillary Facilities to ensure compliance with WMATA Design Criteria and Standards along with local codes and regulations. The Fire Protection engineer will also support construction activities including support to field oversight and construction staff along with support to the Office of Plant Maintenance (PLNT) when issues arise on existing systems. The ideal candidate must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, to ensure that internal and external stakeholders needs are clearly understood and addressed.

SUMMARY
The Fire Protection Engineer is a responsible for ensuring that WMATA’s mechanical fire protection systems meet applicable criteria, specifications, and requirements including local and federal codes. Reporting to Engineering Manager, Assistant Chief Engineer, or similar management position, develops and implements new designs and design modifications to fire protection systems designs at WMATA facilities. Reviews and coordinates drawings and specifications with respect to fire protection systems and ensures compliance with fire protection engineering requirements, WMATA design criteria, and relevant codes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinates and reviews fire protection designs and equipment for WMATA Metrorail, Bus, and Ancillary Facilities to ensure compliance with WMATA Design Criteria and Standards along with local codes and regulations
  • Supports Construction activities including support to field oversight and construction staff along with support to the Office of Plant Maintenance (PLNT) when issues arise concerning Fire Protection systems on construction projects or existing systems
  • Prepares Fire Protection designs including design drawings and specifications for projects which are performed by WMATA Engineering (ENGA)
  • Prepares reports and conducts investigation as a result of problems and issues related to fire protection systems and equipment
  • Provides direction to engineering consultants and other WMATA departments related to design and modifications to fire protection systems including technical direction when issues arise
  • Maintains and updates the mechanical section of the WMATA Design Criteria and Standards as it relates to fire protection. In addition, maintains and updates the various Standard WMATA Fire Protection Specifications and standard drawings
OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Stays abreast of industry developments and code changes in the fire protection engineering field for the benefit of WMATA's construction program and operations reconstruction work
  • Exchanges information with various review boards and committees as required
  • Conducts periodic visits to field sites to provide advice and to conduct reviews and inspections

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Fire Sciences Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering or a related field

Experience
Seven (7) years of design experience or progressively responsible, comprehensive experience in the fire protection engineering field to include sprinkler design, standpipe design, fire detection and ventilation control is required

Certification/Licensure
Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) Certification, Level 2, within 6 months of hire and maintained for the duration of time holding the job

Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver’s license

Preferred
Professional Engineer (PE) license and reciprocity in DC, Maryland, or Virginia within 1 year of hire
