RAIL DEFECT DETECTORS

Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (“Capital Metro” or “the Authority”) is a public agency responsible for providing mass transit service within the City of Austin and the surrounding communities of Leander, Lago Vista, Jonestown, Manor, San Leanna, and Point Venture, as well as the unincorporated area of Travis County within Commissioner Precinct 2 and the Anderson Mill area of Williamson County. Capital Metro services include bus, rail, ride-share programs, special events services, and special transit services for the mobility impaired.
The Red Line is the Capital Metro’s sole commuter rail service which began operations in 2010. This rail service includes nine stations along its 32-mile route and utilizes diesel multiple units (DMUs) manufactured by Stadler. The Red Line terminates at the existing Downtown Station located in the 4th Street right-of-way between Trinity Street and Neches Street.
The defect detection systems are comprised of Dragging Equipment Detection System (Exhibit F-1), Shifted Load Detection System (Exhibit F-2) and Hot Box And Hot Wheel Detection System (Exhibit F-3) which will be placed at identified, strategic locations to detect, store, and alert information regarding train-related issues that may encroach on Capital Metro’s commuter rail corridor and safety of operation. Such issues include detecting dragging equipment that may damage track structures with ‘Dragging Equipment Detectors;’ shifted load that may damage track structures, platforms, or wayside equipment with ‘Shifted Load Detectors;’ and excessively hot journal boxes and wheels that may lead to derailments or further damage to trains or track structures with ‘Hot Box and Hot Wheel Detectors.’ Each system will also be comprised of radios, data storage capability, and other supporting material/equipment to achieve the overall goal of the project.
