DEPARTMENT OVERVIEWTransportation and Parking Services (TAPS) supports the University mission of academics, research and public service by providing and managing access to UC Santa Cruz and overseeing the planning, design and operation of the facilities and programs associated with parking, transit services, and bicycle / pedestrian circulation. The TAPS Transit Operation provides safe and reliable services for a campus population of approximately 18,000 students, as well as staff, faculty, and campus visitors. The campus shuttle system carries an average of 12,500 riders per day during each academic quarter. The Transit Operation also operates an on-campus paratransit program, charter services, a bike shuttle, and a late-night Night Owl service on weekends that travels between the campus and downtown Santa Cruz.

Primary duties include scheduling over 40 professional drivers; monitoring service and drivers throughout the day; adjust shifts and staffing as necessary; oversight of Transit Assistant and Disability Van Service; interact with TAPS mechanic and campus Fleet Services personnel; assist with quarterly driver bid and safety training processes and procedures; write and deliver annual performance evaluations; audit driver time sheets each day; calculate and post daily passenger totals; ensure driver time sheets each day; calculate and post daily passenger totals; ensure driver adherence to department and federal; yard management including vehicle flow, parking, and charging; operate and monitor softwares and dashboards related to transit operations such as video-based safety systems, vehicle telematics and load management systems; drive to fill shifts as needed. APPOINTMENT INFORMATIONBudgeted Salary: $71,000/annually.

JOB DUTIES50% - Supervision and Training - Supervises employee performance, career development, and adherence to job standards and required training, certifications, and licensing.
- Participates in the selection, development, and evaluation of staff.
- Orients new staff and provides staff training on procedures and processes continually.
- Demonstrates and coaches others to provide excellent customer service and anticipates customers' needs, internally and externally.
- Coaches staff to function as a team, providing cross-coverage as needed.
- Oversees scheduling for professional drivers and audits timesheets each day. May need to adjust shifts and staffing as needed based on campus demand or special events.
- Contributes to the oversight of programs such as Safe Ride and Disability Van Service. Supervise the Transit Assistant.
40% - Operational Duties - Monitors bus service and drivers.
- Determines yard, vehicle, equipment, and operational needs, which include the use of software related to transit operation, such as video-based safety systems, vehicle telematics, and load management systems.
- Interacts with campus Fleet Services personnel to request and monitor vehicle maintenance.
- Ensures that all vehicles and facilities are secured at the end of the shift.
- Drive shifts as needed.
- Calculates and records daily passenger totals.
- Assist with quarterly driver bid process.
10% - Policy, Procedure and Protocol - Ensures adherence to emergency protocols and follows established accident procedures, including conducting crash and injury investigations.
- Ensures adherence to organization and external regulatory transit policies and procedures, safety procedures, and rules and regulations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Working knowledge of transit service operations, as well as related policy and regulatory compliance requirements from governmental agencies.
- Excellent supervisory skills with the ability to effectively manage a large staff.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
- Experience in writing clear and concise reports and memoranda.
- Ability to communicate well in writing.
- Ability to communicate well verbally.
- Leadership ability to build a collaborative team.
- Ability to use good judgment to resolve disputes, exchange ideas, and negotiate solutions.
- Experience analyzing problems or situations in order to identify patterns and develop solutions. Problem solving skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- General knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to vehicle codes, accessibility requirements, and vehicle safety.
- Knowledge of US DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements and the procedures for determining reasonable suspicion and post-accident testing.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
- Interviewees will be required to provide a current DMV record.
- Must possess a valid Class B Commercial license to drive in the State of California, with passenger endorsement and a satisfactory driving record. License must not be restricted to vehicles 15 passengers or less including the driver, but must certify individual to drive passenger vehicles weighing more than 26, 001 gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and carrying 20 passengers or more including the driver (DMV CLASS B LICENSE WITH PASSENGER ENDORSEMENT).
- Air Brake Certified.
- Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
- The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
- Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
- Current Medical Examiner's Certificate (Form MCSA-5875).
- Will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test. Must possess a good driving record. Must hold a Medical Certificate Card and be re-certified every 2 years. In accordance with the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations, successful candidate must conform to the drug and alcohol testing requirements as set forth in the UCSC Drug and Alcohol Testing policies and procedures.
