As a member of the Department of Safety and Environmental Management (SAFE), you will be part of a team that is becoming an industry leader in the development and implementation of a robust Safety Management System (SMS). This subject matter expert will help develop Metro’s data-driven Industrial Hygiene Program to identify, evaluate and manage the hazards that affect employee health, wellbeing and safety.
Ideal candidates will have extensive knowledge and experience with: the principles of industrial hygiene, applying scientific methods in health hazard control, the relationships between working conditions and health, the techniques utilized in conducting and summarizing industrial hygiene investigations, as well as compliance with federal, state, and local regulations concerning workplace safety. Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as critical thinking skills are considered essential.
SUMMARY The Industrial Hygienist position develops, integrates and administers the overarching industrial hygiene safety programs within the Authority in support of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulatory requirements. The incumbent initiates, implements and/or oversees a variety of investigative, inspection, and consultative professional assignments to prevent occupational exposures and diseases, and to protect and improve the industrial health and work environment of workforce. The Industrial Hygienist is the focal point for information about, and inquiries concerning, the status of occupational and industrial health issues. The incumbent must be able to perform duties 24/7 (this includes nights, weekends, and holidays).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Develops and coordinates industrial hygiene components of occupational safety programs (including Personal Protection Equipment) and makes changes as necessary. Administers the respiratory protection program including fit testing, training and coordination with Medical and hearing conservation programs. The approach ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations and/or protocols related to industrial hygiene (IH), as well as Authority internal company policies.
- Performs all IH aspects to include fieldwork required for compliance such as calibration, maintenance and operation of equipment for taking air samples and monitoring personnel exposure, performing calculations, selecting and obtaining media, submitting samples for analysis, interpreting survey results and documenting events. Evaluates survey results to determine compliance with OSHA or other applicable regulations.
- Determines appropriate methodologies and collects samples including asbestos, lead, and other biological, chemical and physical substances, for analysis; prepares associated tracking and custody paperwork; prepares and delivers samples for analysis; and drafts and prepares standard reports (with interpretation of results and documentation) on analytical findings. Evaluates sample results to determine compliance with OSHA and/or other applicable regulations
- Inspects and evaluates work and workplace operations, production methods, and engineering/administrative controls to determine potential occupational exposures, contaminant emission sources or related health hazards associated with workplace conditions. Measures airborne concentrations of dust, gases and mists ensuring quality and safety standards are met.
- Conducts investigations of working conditions in places of employment for the prevention of occupational disease and industrial health hazards, with specific reference to toxic chemical and biological substances, noise, ergonomics, temperature stress and harmful physical agents. Participates in incident investigations requiring IH components, draws conclusions, and makes recommendations for correcting unsafe conditions and actions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education Bachelor’s degree in Physical Sciences, Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety management, Engineering or a related health science fields
Experience A minimum of seven (7) years professional experience in the prevention of occupational diseases and protection and the improvement of the industrial health environment
