The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is pleased to announce the recruitment of a Vehicle Systems Engineer (VSE) for the Rolling Stock & Shops department. The VSE performs a variety of professional engineering duties in support of the repair, overhaul, evaluation, reliability, and maintenance of District transit vehicles. Additional duties of the VSE include providing support for the engineering of the train control networking, automatic train control systems, door systems, HVAC systems, friction brakes and propulsion systems, computer software control systems, auxiliary power supply systems, carbody interior and exterior systems, electrical/electronic systems, mechanical and electro-mechanical systems and component.

The incumbent may perform as Lead Software Engineer for small projects or sub-projects that relate to the transit vehicle systems. Moreover, they may create and execute designs for small sets of new functionalities as a part of a software project of the transit vehicle systems.

The ideal candidate will have a degree or course work in computer science (software) and work experience in the management of software systems. Demonstrate competency in writing reports and technical procedures. The ideal candidate will have strong skills in investigating and determining the cause of major transit vehicle equipment failures by applying principles of root cause failure analysis.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Rolling Stock & Shops (RS&S), an ISO 9001:2015 certified department of $138M+ operating budget and 826 FTE, is responsible for all engineering, maintenance and operations support functions for BART railcar fleet. Over the next several years, RS&S will grow as it continues to receive and test new, next generation rail cars, opens the state-of-the-art Hayward Maintenance Complex, and matures its reliability-centered maintenance processes as part of its innovative Strategic Maintenance Program, all while meeting demanding car availability goals for the existing service plan to increase commuter convenience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:
A Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of (full-time equivalent) verifiable engineering work experience relevant to the design and maintenance of transit vehicles.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.

  • Successful completion of the Engineer-in-Training exam for California is desirable.

  • Must be physically able to conduct field inspections and testing as assigned.
