WMATA is seeking a tech-savvy and initiative driven Senior Vehicle Engineer to improve the reliability of the bus fleet. The Engineer should be familiar with all aspects of modern transit bus (or heavy duty trucking) systems, sub-systems, and associated equipment. Successful candidate(s) will be responsible for designing, testing and implementing modifications to existing buses, as well as working with bus manufacturers, vendors and contractors.

The ideal candidate should have extensive knowledge, experience and expertise with Diesel, Diesel-Electric Hybrid, and CNG Power Plant configurations, and related Cooling Systems; and be conversant to work on issues related to Multiplexing, HVAC, Air Brakes, Steering and Suspension, Body and Structure, and Mechanical/Electronic/Electrical/Pneumatic/Hydraulic components.

Job Summary/Duties:
Incumbent is subject matter expert on bus systems and initiates responses on difficult and complex engineering problems/issues to improve reliability, safety, availability, comfort of buses. Manages projects to ensure compliance with schedule, budget, specifications, and other contractual obligations. Evaluates new technologies and makes recommendations for implementation. Reviews and approves drawings, designs, and calculations submitted by contractors, and supports bus procurement activities.
  • Bus reliability support: Investigates failures or reliability issues with bus systems or components through data analysis (database mining) and personal communications with garage mechanics, supervisors, and superintendents. Performs root cause analysis and develops corrective actions. Involves vendors or manufacturers as necessary. Plans and monitors progress on corrective actions. Reports on a bi-weekly basis to supervisor and as needed to upper management. Mentor junior staff to develop technical skills and problems solving capacity.

  • Project management. Coordinates work by vendors or consultants, sets objectives and schedules, monitors progress, and resolves issues as they arise. Reports budget adherence and controls expenditures. Tracks invoices and submits for payment on a monthly basis.

  • Provides technical oversight of test plans, documents progress, and prepares test agreements. To support new bus procurements, participates in vehicle commissioning and testing.

  • Technology evaluation and review on multiple types of technologies and systems. Creation of test plans, analysis and reporting of data. Researches technologies and suggests technologies for testing or implementation, and performs lifecycle cost calculations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s in Engineering, Sciences or related field. Seven (7) years of experience in bus/truck/vehicle engineering support. Experience with multiple subsystems, with expertise in one or more subsystems. Transit agency or bus manufacturer experience preferred.

In lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree, will consider High School or GED with a mechanically related technical training/certification and 11 or more years of professional experience with bus/truck/vehicle systems that includes troubleshooting, problem resolution and project management.

Preferred:
Master’s Degree in Engineering or related field

PE Certification

Transit agency or bus manufacturer experience
