JOB SUMMARY:
The Superintendent of Maintenance plans, directs, and coordinates the work process engaged in the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and cleaning of mass transit vehicles. This position oversees subordinate supervisory personnel to ensure that the maintenance activities are carried out effectively and efficiently in order to consistently provide timely, safe, and cost-effective transportation to the public. Additionally, the SM participates in activities relative to labor relations such as grievance hearings and may assist in the drafting of specifications for shop equipment and vehicle modification. This position performs related work as required. The Superintendent of Maintenance reports directly to the Director of Maintenance.

DUTIES:

  • Plans, directs and coordinates daily and weekly workload process.
  • Direct and maintain workflow process by establishing priorities in the maintenance, repair, overhaul and cleaning of transit vehicles.
  • Oversees and mentors subordinate supervisory personnel activities and ensures all Agency policies, procedures, regulations, and standards are successfully executed.
  • Maintains accurate and timely records required in the performance of repairs and personnel.
  • Reviews daily reports and logs to ensures all repairs are preformed in accordance with established Agency standards and regulations.
  • Participates in activities relative to labor relations and employee performance.
  • Communicates and interacts with various levels of staff personnel, including Managers, Supervisors, Technicians, Material Control, and intra-department personnel.
  • Assists in the development of standards, procedures, and check lists to be used in performance of maintenance and repairs.
  • Keeps abreast of new techniques and developments pertinent in the maintenance field.
  • Assists in the drafting of specifications for shop equipment and vehicle modification.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and procedures of motorized public passenger vehicle maintenance, repair, and overhaul
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of heavy-duty diesels.
  • Thorough knowledge of body repairs, engine, transmission, electrical, electronic, air brakes, pneumatic and air conditioning systems trouble shooting and repairs
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills.
  • Ability to plan, assign, organize, and review the activities of subordinates.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise oral and written reports.
  • Ability to execute a preventive maintenance program.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and perform leadership duties.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills required.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, stretch and lift (50) pounds.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Computer literate, with basic knowledge of Windows, word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Must be able to pass a DOT physical examination and drug screen.
  • Must maintain a current North Carolina CDL, Class B with a “Passenger” and “Air Brake” endorsement.
  • Must be willing to workdays, nights, weekends, holidays.
  • Employees must be able to communicate in English on the work site.
  • Associates Degree in Engineering Technology or Diesel Repair Technology with extensive experience in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of heavy diesel vehicles, in a mass transit or vehicle transportation operation preferred.
  • HS Diploma considered with additional years of specified or related experience within maintenance transportation field with Certificate/Diploma in Diesel Repair Technology and supervisory experience in bus maintenance/heavy vehicle maintenance will be considered in lieu of Associate degree.
  • Proficiency required in MS Office and other maintenance customized transit programs)
  • Able to possess and maintain valid NC or SC Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement.
  • Ability to make independent and sound decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Thorough knowledge of body repairs, engines, transmission, electrical, electronic, air brakes, pneumatic and air conditioning systems troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Ability to plan, assign organize and review activities of subordinates.
  • May be required to perform other related duties as assigned by Dir. Of Maintenance.
  • Must be able to maintain a flexible work schedule (weekends, nights, and holidays).
