General Description:
Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, the Maintenance Shop Supervisor is responsible for supporting and overseeing the daily operations of the shop floor and service lane. Primarily supervising repairs on vehicles and equipment, managing employees engaged in maintenance tasks, scheduling staff, and providing coaching, guidance, and disciplinary action as necessary. Additionally, this role entails managing work orders, controlling workflow for scheduled and non-scheduled repairs, and confirming parts usage. Proficient in reading and interpreting vehicle diagnostics, repairs, and service procedure manuals, uses technology for diagnostics, and supports vehicle testing and repair.

Overall, this position ensures that DASH maintains the highest quality of repair work and vehicle maintenance of the ATC fleet, and employees are performing their work safely, accurately, and efficiently while championing a positive and inclusive work environment.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Supports and manages day-to-day operations of the maintenance shop and service lane ensuring that work orders, repairs, vehicle fueling, and cleaning are performed safely and efficiently. Regularly communicates shop and service lane operational status and service issues to the Maintenance Manager.
  • Supervises mechanics, service workers, and cleaners to ensure vehicles availability, confirms work orders and repairs are completed, and that vehicle records are properly documented.
  • Leads the operational response for major service disruptions and events including vehicle breakdowns, accidents, incidents, and ensures rapid and efficient responses while maintaining consistent service.
  • Oversees the repair of vehicles including diagnosing problems, assigning work orders to mechanics, and ensuring the progress and timely completion of work orders.
  • Coordinates with vendors for work performed on and offsite and ensures vendor work is completed within time constraints, accurately, and documented in vehicle records.
  • Manages the service lane work and staff to ensure vehicles are cleaned, refueled, and serviced according to TMA standards.
  • Provides guidance, training, coaching, counseling, and issues discipline to staff as necessary. Addresses employee issues including policy violations and ensures proper incident documentation. Escalates complex issues and disciplines the Maintenance Manager in consultation with Human Resources.
  • Maintains supporting documentation and provides constructive feedback to the Maintenance Manager for evaluations and annual reviews of maintenance personnel.
  • Supports the Maintenance Manager with the following administrative processes:

    • Daily attendance tracking including extended leave, worker’s compensation, medical, unpaid leave requests, etc.
    • Monitors and reports daily staffing levels to the Maintenance Manager.
    • Assists with the preparation of payroll data including timesheets, schedules, leave, time off, hours worked, overtime, and employee reimbursements.
    • Assists with employment changes and payroll discrepancies.
    • Assists with the collection and safeguarding of key performance indicators (KPIs) data including service performance statistics, attendance, overtime, and safety-related events.

  • Ensures shop floor, maintenance bays, garage, service lane, and all storage areas are clean, organized, and in compliance with OSHA regulations and Company standards.
  • May participate in the recruitment and selection process for maintenance staff in accordance with TMA recruitment policy.
  • Coordinates with the operations department to correct vehicle defects and ensure proper fleet availability for service needs and pull-out.
  • Ensures compliance with company policies and procedures, applicable rules and regulations, safety standards, union contracts, and maintenance standard operating procedures.
  • Utilizes software, technology, schematics, repair manuals, hand tools, pneumatic tools, hydraulic tools, and ancillary shop equipment for work orders, inspections, and preventative maintenance while following established OEM procedures. Assists technicians with vehicle test drives for verification of successful completion of vehicle maintenance.
  • Works with the Parts Department on request for required parts for vehicle maintenance.
  • May assists mechanics with road and service calls as needed.
  • Monitors and supports mechanics, service workers, and cleaners with work orders, inspections, preventative maintenance, service lane functions, etc.
  • Maintains proper licensing, certifications, and related requirements for the operation of all types of DASH vehicles.
  • Attends Company or departmental meetings and trainings as required.
  • Stays updated with industry stands and best practices; seeks, identifies and attends professional development opportunities and growth through training programs, certifications, professional associations, seminars, etc.
  • Supports other TMA departments with company activities as they relate to the maintenance department and staff.
  • Fosters and supports a positive and inclusive work environment through recognition, engagement, and performance programs, while ensuring a customer-centric approach.
  • Cooperatively and effectively performs related tasks and duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Technical Skills:
  • Knowledgeable in fixed transit vehicle operations, services, and technology.
  • Strong understanding of Diesel and Gasoline equipment repair procedures.
  • Familiar with general transit industry best practices and trends.
  • Proficient in fleet maintenance and service tracking software (Fleetio, Track, etc.).
  • Comfortable with troubleshooting software related to fleet maintenance.
  • Proficient with computers, hardware, and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams).

Administrative Skills:
  • Knowledge and understanding of payroll, timekeeping systems, and employment regulations.
  • Proficient with general office equipment (printers, copiers, phones).

Management and Communication Skills:
  • Ability to interpret and enforce company policies, procedures, and CBA.
  • Ability to analyze data and strong communication skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate and distribute training materials.

  • Ability to perform extended sitting, standing, walking, bending, twisting, and turning throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift light objects (under 50 lbs.) occasionally.
  • Ability to attend meetings and move around the facility and grounds.

Additional/Miscellaneous/Special Requirements:
  • Must possess or be able to acquire within 60 days of hire a Virginia, Maryland, or District of Columbia Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and Air-Brake endorsement.
  • Acceptable criminal history record check upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Negative pre-employment drug screen results upon hire and as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and TMA policy, throughout entirety of employment.
  • ASE certifications strongly preferred.
  • May be required to attend training, meetings, and classes for continued professional development which may involve local and regional travel.
  • Successful completion of the following TSI courses is required within eighteen (18) months of employment: Bus System Safety, Transit Industrial Safety Management, SMS Awareness, SMS Safety Assurance, and SMS Principles for Transit.
  • Reasonable Suspicion and Post-Accident Testing training compliant with USDOT regulations is required within one year of employment.

Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Associates degree or higher from an accredited technical school, college, or university with major coursework Fleet Management, Mechanical, Business Administration or a related field highly preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in transit maintenance services, facility maintenance services, and general vehicle maintenance or related required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of progressive supervisory experience in a transit, automotive, fleet, or similar maintenance environment required.
  • Diesel experience required.
  • Electric vehicle experience preferred.
  • Experience working in a Union environment preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with fixed route transit operations preferred.
  • Working knowledge of DOT, FTA, and FMCSA policies and regulations preferred.
  • Relevant certification or training in maintenance, fleet operations, or related programs a plus.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree or higher may be considered in lieu of advanced education requirements.
