The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) provides a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public while promoting economic development and preserving New Mexico's environment.

NMDOT's Transit and Rail Division provides information to transit providers and the public regarding public transit service, rules and regulations, applying for federal transit grant programs, transit and rail plans and programs, and permitting procedures for accessing and crossing rail right-of-way.

Why does the job exist?
This position assists the Rail Facilities and Permitting Section with owner oversight and management of NMDOT-owned railroad facilities. This position also assists with NMDOT highway projects that involve coordination with railroad companies.

How does it get done?
This position will utilize autoCAD, Microsoft Word, GIS (ArchGIS), Excel and databases to prepare and/or review signs, contracts, contract exhibits, technical documents, letters and spreadsheets for highway project with rail coordination support and tasks related to ownership oversight of NMDOT's railroad and railroad right of way.

This position will attend project scoping and design review meetings and final inspections state-wide, as well as monitoring and inspecting NMDOT owned railroad infrastructure and right of way conditions and assisting with railroad grade crossing field inventories state-wide.

NMDOT's executive management, districts, regional design offices, bureaus and sections; local government agencies; NMDOT's railroad operator and tenant railroads; statewide railroad companies.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred experience/education in the following areas:

• Five (5) year's of experience in autoCAD, GIS (ArchGIS), Microsoft Word, Excel.
• Ability to read, understand and interpret construction plans; knowledge or experience in railroad operations, maintenance and design; federal railroad regulations and federal highway regulationsrelative to projects with railroad coordination.
• Proficient writing skills; some experience or knowledge of surveying.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions: hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. Exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather, accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required. Willingness to accept change of geographical assignments; interaction with the public.
