MAJOR JOB DUTIES:

1. Supervises the transportation terminal and operation activities in an assigned district.

2. Drives or rides over routes.

3. Checks with service inspectors and observes loads on transportation equipment.

4. Performs counts and studies of the amount of traffic carried on transportation equipment.

5. Determines needs for changes in service.

6. Prepares requisitions for new or revised schedules.

7. Assigns terminal and inspectional personnel and checks their work.

8. Ensures that equipment and operating personnel are assigned.

9. Handles the more difficult disciplinary measures, checks accident, rule violations, or operation reports to determine proper action.

10. Interviews offenders, determines penalties, or prepares charges for the Board of Review.

11. Stays abreast of physical condition of routes and mechanical condition of equipment and profitable operation of lines.

12. correspondence in reply to complaints.

13. Prepares reports.

14. Interprets departmental policies for employees.

15. Maintains close check on operating expenses and arranges divisional expenditures so as to remain within budgetary allotments.

16. Investigates and reports on accidents.

17. Directs the transportation of crowds at special events, such as football or baseball games.

• Urban transportation principles and practices.

• Effective oral and written communication.

• Supervising and directing the work of others.

ABILITY TO:

• Coordinate and prepare schedules and to determine the effect of changes in traffic on schedule requirements.

• Manage and direct terminal activities.

• Use tact in dealing with subordinates, other departmental employees, and the general public.

• Utilize initiative and resourcefulness in handling personnel and operating problems.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Valid State of Michigan Operator License.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Work requires field inspections, investigations and services that involve exposure to seasonal weather conditions, and the operation of auto vehicles.
