Job Summary/Duties:
This is responsible, technical training work of a difficult nature. Employee is responsible for the development, implementation and presentation of required Technical Skills Training courses. Employee instructs in both the classroom and hands-on situations, and evaluates student process throughout the training program. Employee has considerable latitude for independent judgment and action within established guidelines. Employee is supervised by the Supervisor, Technical Skills Training Program.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive Technical Skills Training Program for entry level maintenance interns in all maintenance trades. Assists in training programs for advanced maintenance skill level employees.

  • Conducts classroom and practical maintenance training for mechanical, electrical, and supervisory level personnel. Instructs and demonstrates utilizing applicable technical data, tools, precision measuring/special equipment, test instrumentation and correct maintenance procedures.

  • Develops and prepares training courses and lesson plans, ensuring periodic updates are included.

  • Evaluates student performance, certifies that employees have successfully completed required training programs, and are qualified to operate specific equipment and perform specified duties.

  • Consults with maintenance supervisors to determine effectiveness of training and compliance with prescribed maintenance procedures. Makes appropriate recommendations for training program additions and deletions.

  • Maintains current knowledge of state-of-the-art maintenance training processes, safety principles and regulations, and Authority maintenance procedures.

  • Consults with Authority managers, engineers, and contractors to identify outside training courses, aids, and other resources needed for the training program. Collaborates with TRNG and other Authority offices in the preparation of training manuals.

  • Makes proper utilization of training techniques i.e., lecture methods, lectures and demonstrations, demonstration and student participation, use of mock-ups, questions, answers, and student testing.

  • May be required to prepare and present oral/written reports as required.

  • Prepares and maintains current training aids, charts, view-graphs, visual aid and mock up equipment simulators and mock-ups. Ensures availability of classroom space, and equipment for specific training programs.

  • Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge of electrical, electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical technologies as applied to urban transit systems.

  • Supervises trainees while they are under the control of the Training Branch. This includes ensuring compliance with WMATA directives, standard operating procedures, safety and operating rules, time accountability, and complaint resolution. May recommend trainees for commendations or disciplinary action as appropriate.

  • Conducts technical and compliant (Industrial Hygiene, Safety, and Regulatory Compliance) training as required.

  • Assists in other training programs where overlap or intersection occurs.

  • Researches and prepares technical and administrative reports in support of the operation.

  • Acts an expert witness for the Authority in litigation.

  • Performs other related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate’s Degree supplemented by advanced formal training in electrical, electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, or machinist field. A minimum of four (4) years experience in a maintenance craft directly related to urban transit. Previous experience as an instructor in a related field is required.

Or, an equivalent combination of post-high school education and more than six (6) years of experience in maintenance craft(electrical, electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, or machinist) directly related to urban transit. Previous experience as an instructor in a related field is required.

License:
Possession of, or the ability to rapidly obtain a District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with Commercial Drivers License endorsement from the jurisdiction of residence.

Possession of, or the ability to obtain Chlorinated Fluorocarbon certification.

Medical Group:
Ability to complete satisfactorily the medical examination for this job. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of this job either with or without reasonable accommodation(s).
