JOB SUMMARY Performs a variety of routine to skilled maintenance, construction, inspection and repair duties on the District’s ties, rails, rail beds, signage, and related light rail track system; performs physical labor to accomplish assigned duties; inspects rails and track system for defects, wear, and other unsafe conditions; may serve as crew leader, providing training and oversight to less experienced employees; may work as a flagperson to protect the public, employees and District equipment and/or may attend to switches during emergencies or when re-routing trains; practices safe work processes and contributes to the creation and maintenance of a safe working environment for self and others; and performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Inspects, constructs, maintains and repairs the District’s light rail and track systems and related structures; performs routine rail maintenance including the removal and replacement of rail, ties, track fastenings and turnout fittings; repairs, adjusts, cleans, and lubricates switches, frogs, road crossings, appliances, signs and drainage structures; surfaces and lines track; cuts, drills, grinds and welds rail and track components; sets up and prepares materials for welding to include Stick, MIG and TIG; safely operates District vehicles, tools, and equipment required in the normal performance of assigned duties; walks track during inspection; inspects for rail defects; may work as a flag person when directed for the protection of the public, employees and District equipment and/or perform switch tending assignments during emergencies and rerouting of trains; and performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of responsible full time work experience successfully performing railroad track construction, repair and/or maintenance duties requiring continuous heavy manual labor, similar to the District’s Rail Laborer; or the successful completion of the District’s Rail Maintenance Certification Program.

Special Requirements, Licenses and/or Certifications: Must possess a valid Driver’s License at time of application and have the ability to obtain a Class A California Driver’s permit with endorsement(s) prior to the start of employment and the ability to obtain a Class A California Driver’s License with endorsement(s) within 90 days of the start of employment. Must have satisfactory driving record. Must have ability to obtain the District’s LRV Operator and High Rail Operator Licenses within 90 days of appointment. Must comply with drug and alcohol testing provisions for safety-sensitive employees as required by the FTA, Department of Transportation (49 CFR, Parts 40 and 655). Must pass the Ishihara Eye Test (color acuity). Required to obtain the tools for the Rail Maintenance Worker by the end of the probationary period.
