The San Mateo County Transit District is the administrative body for public transit and transportation programs in San Mateo County, California: SamTrans bus service, Redi-Wheels paratransit service, Caltrain commuter rail service and the managing agency for the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. Our Caltrain Modernization division seeks an experienced Principal Planner who will be responsible for capital project planning and development including station area planning and system planning for the blending of California High Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) and Caltrain Commuter Services for the Caltrain Modernization (CalMod) Project. In this hands on role, the selected candidate will work with the CHSRA on operations planning and environmental efforts (compliance with California Environmental Quality Act and National Environmental Policy Act), and lead the direction of the Caltrain grade separation planning program planning including the policies to implement specific projects. We seek an experienced individual to provide planning support to the Caltrain Engineering and Construction Department on various capital projects. The candidate will also establish and manage project schedules and planning services plus represent CalMod Planning in City Councils and Planning Commission meetings and communicate the programs to city and county partners.

Additionally, the selected candidate will monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established Caltrain policies and procedures, consult with senior management regarding Caltrain policies and procedures, make recommendations for changes and improvements as well as prepare reports and give presentations and promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.

Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, transportation planning, transportation engineering, economics, public administration, public policy or related field plus four years of full-time, progressively responsible planning experience. Experience with passenger rail operations or capital project delivery is desirable plus knowledge of federal and state laws, and regulations pertaining to planning programs and the principles of public policy and decision making and federal and state funding programs, and capital budgeting. Candidates must possess a valid California driver’s license with a safe driving record.
