Job Summary/Duties:
This is rapid transit vehicle maintenance work. An employee in this job is responsible for the inspection, repair, removal, installation, troubleshooting, testing and calibration of rapid transit vehicle mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and its related equipment. The work requires an understanding of maintenance procedures and practices, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic theory, the materials, parts, tools, test equipment and operating systems associated with WMATA rail cars and repair facilities.

Employees are assigned elementary mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic maintenance work in a repair facility to gain familiarity with and acquire skills in repair and inspection of transit vehicles. All important aspects of the work are subject to detailed and specific procedures which the employee follows closely. Employees receive instruction and close supervision on new assignments, while regular assignments are performed independently. Work is normally reviewed and verified upon completion. Employee is supervised by a Rail Car Inspection or Shop Supervisor.

• Performs repairs, inspections, required adjustments, testing, troubleshooting, cleaning, lubrication, and scheduled maintenance on assigned rail car equipment in accordance with blueprints, diagrams, schematics, operation manuals and manufacturer's maintenance instructions.

• Performs preventive, scheduled, unscheduled or corrective maintenance, troubleshoots and tests all vehicle systems, subsystems and components using precision measuring equipment such as calipers, verniers and micrometers to check for excessive wear on bushings, bearings and gears; and other instruments as required. Operates shop equipment (drill press, grinder, flange gauge, pi tapes) and uses various special tools.

• Observes mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems and components in operation to detect potential failures or locate causes of malfunctions. Dismantles devices and removes defective parts. Inspects used parts and equipment for changes in calibration, dimensional requirements and manufacturer's specifications. Tests and calibrates systems and equipment to ensure proper system operations using test equipment or precision measuring instruments.

• Maintains rail car trucks and truck mounted equipment (wheels, axles, gear boxes, traction motors, collector shoe assemblies, and friction brake equipment) by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests, lubricating and cleaning, assemblies, removing, replacing or repairing defective or worn parts, and calibrating (truing, shimming, and leveling) to manufacturer's specifications using approved procedures and test equipment.

• Maintains hydraulic (pumps, brake control units, pressure switches, valves) and pneumatic equipment (compressors, actuators, suspension systems) and their associated check and control valves, components and system interfaces by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests, repairing, replacing or removing defective components and calibrating to manufacturer's specifications using approved procedures and test equipment.

• Maintains mechanical systems (doors, couplers, drawbars, brake calipers, actuators and cylinders, collector shoe assemblies, propulsion components and gear boxes) and associated control equipment by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests, repairing, replacing or removing defective components and calibrating to manufacturer's specifications using approved procedures and test equipment.

• Maintains interior/exterior carbody structural equipment by painting and performing scheduled maintenance inspections; removing, replacing or repairing defective or worn carpeting, seat cushions and backs, window glass, 1iners, light fixtures and lamps, heater strips and guards using approved procedures and tools.

• Implements Engineering Modification Instructions (EMI's) and Maintenance Service Instructions (MSI's) to rail car mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Performs new component acceptance testing.

• Completes required documentation and reports for the repair and maintenance of transit car equipment and related components by using the proper forms, tags or entering data into the Maintenance and Reliability System (MARS); requisitions parts from the supply room.

• Attends on-the-job and formal training classes; assists mechanics in higher classifications in their assignments or provides job specific training to mechanics in lower classifications.

• Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies which require movement of trains involved in incidents, accidents or derailments using rerail equipment.

• Performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.

• May operate Authority vehicles between work locations.

• Works variable shifts, days and hours as required and as provided for under existing Union contract.

• Performs all other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate, and satisfactory completion of an acceptable vocational school and/or training program in basic mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic repairs or a related field is required. Must satisfactorily pass both a written and practical examination with a minimum score of 70 to advance to the next level.

Considerable knowledge of and have performed satisfactorily the duties of a mechanic or related field for a period of not less than two(2) years.

Medical Group:
Ability to complete satisfactorily the medical examination or this job.

Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks including frequent lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally to 75 pounds.

Ability to distinguish basic colors for component, wiring and safety identification.

License:
Possession of a valid District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia motor vehicle operator's license from jurisdiction of residence. Safe driving record with no more than four (4) points accumulated over the past three (3)years.
