Position Summary:

The Train Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of trains in passenger and yard service in strict accordance with Federal regulations and all applicable DTO rules and instructions.

Description of Duties:

  • Perform pre-trip inspections and tests to ensure the train meets all pre-departure standards
  • Operate trains in accordance with timetable schedules and all applicable rules and instructions
  • Control the train by throttle adjustment and brake application to provide a safe, comfortable ride for passengers
  • Monitor track conditions, wayside and cab signals, in-cab gauges and displays and radio and intercom communications
  • At station stops, observe passengers entering and exiting train doors and take corrective action when there are problems
  • Make announcements to passengers regarding station arrivals, delays and emergencies and answer passenger calls on the train intercom
  • Observe and report hazards or unusual conditions on the train, the right of way, in stations or on platforms to the Operations Control Center (OCC) via radio and take necessary corrective actions
  • Report delays that occur enroute to the OCC
  • Detect and report any vehicle defects or failures that occur enroute to the OCC and take prescribed actions
  • Take prescribed actions during emergencies such as communicating with the OCC, evacuating passengers, administering first aid, using a fire extinguisher and supporting the efforts of first responders
  • Move trains in yards, shops and wash facilities at the direction of the designated movement authority in accordance with applicable rules and instructions
  • Coordinate closely with station staff, security personnel and other staff to ensure the safety, comfort, and convenience of all system users
  • When authorized to do so, supervise and provide instruction to Operator trainees
  • Comply with all safety rules and instructions including the use of personal protective equipment
  • Complete all required reports and paperwork
  • All other duties as assigned


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical written material such as operator’s manuals, air brake and train handling manuals, electrical operation instructions and safety and operating rule books
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings such as diagrams, simple schematics and flow charts
  • Ability to accurately receive and process complex (multiple-step, detailed) information that is communicated verbally
  • Ability to commit to memory large quantities of information that are used daily in decision making and train operations
  • Ability to accurately perform multiple and sometimes unrelated tasks at the same or within a very short period of time
  • Must earn Federal licensure to operate passenger trains. After completing the Train Operator training program, candidates pass a skills performance test and a written exam that tests their knowledge of train operations. A Train Operator must re-qualify for the certification every three years.
  • Minimum three years’ work experience demonstrating conscientious job performance, exemplary attendance and ability to perform multiple complex tasks
  • Experience operating large vehicles or work equipment a plus
  • Education or work experience demonstrating mechanical and electrical aptitude a plus
  • Must pass a DOT pre-employment physical examination and a physical ability assessment related to the physical requirements of the essential functions of the position
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and successfully pass a pre-employment background check
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screen and be willing to comply with the DTO Drug and Alcohol Policy
  • Must sign a release of records authorizing all previous railroad employers to provide DTO with background information, if applicable
  • In accordance with FRA regulations, previous railroad service records must be void of any drug and alcohol violations within the previous 60 months
  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license
  • Applicants must provide a certified copy of their motor vehicle driving record from the Chief of the State licensing agency in which the applicant was last issued a license and any license(s) issued or reissued from other state(s) within the preceding 60 months.
  • Must have a motor vehicle driving record void of any convictions or state action canceling, revoking, suspending or denying a driver’s license for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of or impaired by alcohol or a controlled substance or a record of refusal to undergo such testing as required by state law
