Position Summary
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is inviting applications from current or former military personnel for Metro Bus Operator Trainee Positions. Qualifying candidates must be at least 21 years old at the time of testing and possess the ability to satisfactorily complete the background check and medical examination process. The most desirable candidates are those who currently possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or Learner's permit with Passenger Bus and Air Brakes endorsements. Individuals who complete the 8 week paid Training program will assume full time Metro Bus Operator position. The military occupational skills (MOS) or service occupational codes (SOC) that are most applicable to the Bus Operator position are listed below.

Responsibilities
OPERATORS MUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE AN EIGHT(8) WEEK TRAINING COURSE AT THE HOURLY RATE OF $12.03 BEFORE ASSUMING POSITION.

THIS IS AN EXTENDED DURATION POSTING FOR FUTURE VACANCIES. APPLICATIONS ARE CONTINUOUSLY ASSESSED.

Position Summary
This position is responsible for the safe and courteous operation of a public transit bus through assigned scheduled routes. The incumbent must adhere to all safety and traffic rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure the well being of Metro customers, employees, self, and the general public. Additionally, an individual in this role provides schedule and fare information, collects fares, and ensures the safe boarding and alighting of all passengers. The individual in this role must demonstrate a professional, pleasant, courteous and helpful demeanor towards the public at all times and must be able to maintain composure in stressful situations. This role is a safety sensitive position with high visibility and responsibility involving the operation of a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) commercial passenger bus.

Major Duties
  • Drives and operates a commercial passenger bus, transporting passengers to and from scheduled stops.

  • Conducts routine bus inspections of assigned vehicle before and after daily run in conformance with all applicable safety and operating procedures. Documents inspection findings.

  • Prepares and submits accident and incident reports in a timely manner utilizing proper forms and in accordance with established guidelines. Periodically collect data for use in traffic analysis.

  • Collects proper fares and validate passes and identification cards, utilizing electronic fare registering and collection equipment.

  • Courteously provide schedule, route, and fare information to passengers seeking assistance.

  • Operates wheelchair lifts or scooters and secure equipment of affected passengers in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Assist disabled passengers in boarding, riding, and alighting in a safe manner.

  • Uses 2-way radio and logs into the Automated Vehicle Locator (AVL) to communicate with Bus Operations Central Control (BOCC). BOCC communication will include reports of accidents, equipment failures, schedule delays, hazardous or dangerous conditions along bus route and passenger loading zones, to include such hazards as unusual traffic, road conditions, obstructions, construction, and potential criminal activity.

  • Complies with State driving regulations and all of Metro's safety rules, policies, and procedures.

  • Exercises reasonable care in the handling of funds and other valuables, to include proper reporting of lost articles.

  • Maintains, supports, and promotes a safe work environment at all times.

  • Promptly engage Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD) in cases of passenger unruly conduct and/or any threat to passenger or safety of self.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of or the ability to acquire knowledge of the applicable motor vehicle code of the jurisdiction in which the incumbent will operate vehicle.

  • Knowledge of or the ability to acquire knowledge of an assigned vehicle in order to evaluate its general operating condition.

  • Ability to memorize routes, transfer points, and fare structures and adhere to timetables.

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and strictly comply with safety and traffic rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Ability to deliver stellar customer service and communicate effectively and courteously even under adverse circumstances.

  • Ability to work various shifts, hours, locations, and holidays with varying days off yet maintain regular good attendance and punctuality.

  • Ability to consistently report to work in a timely fashion in order to receive service runs instructions.

  • Ability to professionally represent WMATA as a uniformed employee.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.


Qualification Requirements
In order to be considered for employment all applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirements. Applicants should include all relevant education and work experience on their application.

Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate (GED). Must have three (3) years of continuous and verifiable post high school employment or a combined three (3) years of verifiable full or part-time student status and employment history. At least one (1) year of direct customer service and/or prior commercial bus, taxi or limousine driving experience.

License
A current valid driver's license is required and the ability to acquire a valid Commercial Driver Learner's (CDL) Permit from jurisdiction of residence is required prior to appointment with proper endorsements for Passenger bus and Air Brakes. Must acquire a valid Commercial Driver's License with Passenger bus and Air Brakes endorsements by the completion of training.

Medical Group
Satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position is required. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of this particular position either with or without reasonable accommodation(s).
