About TransitTalent.com

TransitTalent.com LLC was founded in late 2007 by Steve Hirano, former editor and associate publisher of METRO Magazine, as well as SCHOOL BUS FLEET Magazine. Steve has been a professional journalist since 1982 and is a graduate of California State University, Northridge, with a bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in biology. He is a member of both the editorial advisory boards for both METRO and SCHOOL BUS FLEET and is also a member of the American Public Transportation Association.

In the May 2007 issue of METRO, Steve researched and wrote an article called “Leadership Gap Threatens Future of Transit Industry” (PDF) that convinced him that the public transportation industries — bus and rail transit, motorcoach, school bus, shuttle operations, manufacturers and suppliers, government agencies, state departments of transportation — are facing a severe talent shortage over the next several years as Baby Boomers start to retire.

The Staff at TransitTalent.com

The goal of TransitTalent.com is to help public transportation meet this challenge by creating a resource that will help to bring the industry’s employers together with talented job seekers. It will accomplish this feat through multiple channels:

  • Creating a clearinghouse of public transportation jobs that can be accessed by all job seekers, especially those with an interest in public transportation.
  • Attracting talented young people to the public transportation industry through outreach to colleges, universities and trade schools and by offering free internship listings to employers.
  • Conducting research that could help to improve the industry’s image and position it as a preferred employer. (A recent TransitTalent survey indicated that more than 75% of the people who work in public transportation are either “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their jobs.)
  • Pushing news to the industry through a free weekly e-mail newsletter called “Transit Intelligence.” The e-newsletter will not only bring employees up to speed with the latest news, it will also inform them of new job openings. This will help to fill positions with qualified people and to attract passive candidates (those who didn’t know they were looking for a job.)
  • Providing the public transportation industry with news about workforce development issues through a free monthly e-newsletter called “Transit Workforce.” Retention of top-performing employees will help to lighten the burden of recruiting new employees.
